What Is A Power Of Attorney?

A Power of Attorney is a legal document which allows somebody else to legally manage your financial affairs if you become unable to do so. This would be useful where you need temporary cover, for example in the case of illness, or if you find it difficult to get to the bank or post office yourself. To do this, you have to choose and willingly appoint someone that you trust as your attorney. This could be a family member, close friend or solicitor.

You are in control of how much power you give your attorney – you could give them access to some assets but not others, and if you change your mind, you can cancel the Power of Attorney at any time.
